What Is Lazy Eye(Amblyopia)? Is It Curable?

Lazy eye, or amblyopia in medical terms, is a condition in which normal visual development is impeded, resulting in reduced vision. The condition usually begins in childhood and one eye develops less than the other.

Lazy eye usually occurs when there is a problem with one eye’s ability to focus or visual perception. This can be caused by a difference in vision between the eyes. For example, if one eye has a defect such as astigmatism, myopia (short-sightedness) or hyperopia (distance vision) and the other eye does not, this can affect the development of vision and lead to lazy eye.

Children with lazy eye often try to see with one eye and neglect the other eye. For this reason, lazy eye can often become permanent unless it is treated. When diagnosed and treated early, lazy eye can be corrected.

Treatment options may include optical corrections such as glasses or contact lenses, therapies such as eye patching or eye drops. Patching involves covering the stronger eye so that the weaker eye is used more and develops. Treatment for lazy eye is usually individualized depending on the age of the child, the cause and severity of the condition.

Symptoms of lazy eye may include:

1-Constant closing or rubbing of one eye.

2-Blinking or wandering movements of the eyes.

3-Frequent blinking of the eyes during reading or writing.

4-Blurred or double vision of objects.

5-Pain or discomfort in the eyes.

If lazy eye is suspected, it should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist or pediatric ophthalmologist. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to achieve more successful outcomes.
