An Intraocular Lens (IOL) is an artificial lens placed inside the eye. They are usually used during cataract surgery. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.

Intraocular lenses can have various focal lengths and designs. These lenses are inserted into the eye during surgery and positioned behind the cornea or behind the iris (the part that determines eye color). These lenses are held by the eye tissue and are usually permanent for life.

Some intraocular lenses are monofocal, meaning that they only provide clear vision at a certain distance (for example, far distance). Others are so-called multifocal or trifocal lenses, which are designed to provide clear vision at far, intermediate and near distances. Selection of lenses are based on the patient’s lifestyle and needs.

Intraocular lenses are often used to reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. They restore patients’ vision after cataract surgery.
