Episcleritis and scleritis are two separate eye diseases associated with inflammation of the sclera, the outer layer of the eye. Episcleritis is characterized by inflammation of the episclera, a thin layer on the surface of the sclera. This condition usually leads to painless redness of the eye and usually has a good prognosis.
Scleritis is more serious and affects the deeper tissues of the sclera. Scleritis can cause redness of the eye, often painful, tenderness in the eye and even loss of vision. Underlying health problems such as systemic immune diseases or autoimmune disorders can be one of the causes of scleritis.
Both conditions should be taken seriously and evaluated by an ophthalmologist. Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the disease. Anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and sometimes immunosuppressive drugs may be used for treatment.
