    Eyelid Aesthetics (Oculoplasty)

Eyelid aesthetics refers to surgical or non-surgical procedures to improve the appearance or functionality of the eyelid. These procedures usually:

    • Correct sagging eyelids
    • Reduce wrinkles around the eyes
    • Remove bags under the eyes
    • Lift the eyebrows

Although eyelid aesthetics is usually performed for visual aesthetic purposes, in some cases it may also be required to improve eyelid functions or to enlarge the visual field.

    2-Why Do Eyelids Age?

The eyelids are affected by the aging process because the signs of aging on the skin usually start most prominently around the eyes. Here are some of the main factors that lead to aging of the eyelids:

    • Loss Of Collagen And Elastin In The Skin: As we age, collagen and elastin levels in the skin decrease. These proteins provide firmness and elasticity to the skin. With the loss of collagen and elastin, the skin of the eyelids begins to sag and wrinkle.
    • Fat And Muscle Loss: The fatty tissue and muscles in the eyelids also decrease or weaken during the aging process. This causes the eyelids to lose their fullness and supportive structure.
    • Thinning Of The Eyelid Skin: With aging, the eyelid skin becomes thinner. This causes the veins and pigmentation on the eyelids to become more prominent.
    • Eyelid Wrinkles: Associated with mimic use, wrinkles may appear on the eyelids. Over time, these wrinkles can deepen and become more pronounced.
    • Eyelid Bags: During the aging process, eyelid bags form under the eyes as a result of the displacement or accumulation of fatty tissue under the skin. This causes the lower eyelids to appear swollen.

The combination of these factors leads to aging of the eyelids and aesthetic or functional problems. Therefore, the symptoms of aging eyelids are often managed with eyelid surgery or other medical treatments.

    3-How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

First of all, the patient’s complaints and expectations should be listened to very carefully. What can be done should be explained to the patient objectively. The patient and the doctor should mutually discuss the results and reach a decision.

After the operation is decided, the eye surgeon plans the operation. He applies certain drawings on the patient’s eyelids. Following the application of local anesthesia, he removes excess skin and fat pieces under the guidance of these drawings. If necessary, it also corrects the lid function by intervening in the lid muscles. He transfers the fat taken from the excess area to the missing areas and ensures a smooth spread. The operation ends by closing the incision sites with aesthetic sutures.

4-What Happens After The Eyelid Surgery:

The first day after eyelid aesthetic surgery is an important part of the healing process. Here are some important steps to be taken during this period:

    • Rest And Recovery: It is important to rest and start the healing process immediately after the procedure. If possible, you should rest at home on the first day after treatment. Bed rest is recommended in some cases.
    • Cold Application: After the eyelid aesthetic procedure, cold compresses or ice packs can be applied to reduce swelling and bruising. However, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with the skin when applying ice.
    • Taking Medicines: It is important to take painkillers or other medicines (regularly) recommended by your doctor. This can relieve pain and help with relaxation.
    • Protecting the Eyes: In the first days after eyelid surgery, it is important to protect the eyes. Sunglasses should be worn, especially to keep safe from the sun. Also, activities that can damage the eyes should be avoided.
    • Lying Position: Keeping the head in an elevated position while lying down can reduce swelling and help relaxation. If possible, it is helpful to sleep with your head elevated.
    • Following Doctor’s Instructions: It is very important to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully. The doctor’s advice on how to take medication, what activities to avoid and what to pay attention to during the recovery process is important.
    • Nutrition: A healthy and balanced diet is important during recovery. Drinking plenty of water and eating light, easily digestible foods can support the body’s healing process. It is also good to avoid cigarette smoke on the eyelids.

These steps will help you spend your first day after eyelid aesthetic treatment comfortably and start a healthy healing process.

5-Removal Of The Stitches And Afterwards:

Sutures are removed after one week.

Although the healing process varies from person to person, 80% of the healing is completed after 15 days.

Women can wear make-up after one month. Again after 1 month, you can enter the pool or sea. It is more appropriate to prefer sea goggles.

Skin nourishing creams are used for wound healing.

    Botox: Botulinum Toxin

Botox works by relaxing the muscles. The muscles around the eyes relax thanks to Botox. Muscle relaxation is followed by skin relaxation and wrinkled skin is smoothed.

How Is The Botox Procedure Performed?

Anesthetic creams are applied to the application area and after 20 minutes waiting period, a sufficient amount of Botox is injected into the predetermined points. The injection area should not be itched or rubbed.

How Long Does Botox Effect Last?

Botox effect lasts for 4-6 months.

Why Is Botox Used Around The Eyes?

Cosmetically, Botox injections are often used to reduce wrinkles on the face. It is especially preferred to correct dynamic wrinkles in areas such as the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet) and between the eyebrows. When injected into the muscles, Botox reduces wrinkles by temporarily blocking the movement of the muscles.

Botox is also used in the treatment of involuntary blinking.

Botox is also used in the treatment of some double vision problems.

What Should Be Considered After Botox Applications?

Some points to be considered after Botox application are as follows:

    • Do Not Touch And Rub: Try not to touch and rub the application area as. This ensures that the effect of botulinum toxin is optimal.
    • Lying Position: Try to sleep with your head elevated for the first few hours. This prevents the spread at the injection site from going to unwanted places.
    • Alcohol And Smoking: Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking after the procedure. These can affect blood circulation and slow healing.
    • Monitoring Side Effects: Monitor for possible side effects after the procedure. These may include mild pain, swelling, redness or headache. If symptoms become severe or persist for a long time, contact your doctor.

    Duration Of Botox Effect:

The effect of Botox starts in 1-3 days and the full effect is seen after 14 days. The effect lasts 4-6 months. At the end of this period, the injection can be repeated.
