Retinal detachment is a serious eye problem in which the retinal layer in the inner part of the eye detaches, resulting in loss of vision. The retina is a vital layer of tissue at the back of the eye where the light-sensing visual cells are located. Patients who develop retinal detachment may first see images such as flashes of light, flying objects, and curtains being drawn. When these signs are seen by the patient, it requires urgent medical attention.

If left untreated, it leads to permanent vision loss. This disease is usually corrected by surgery. The torn retinal layer is glued back into place. In good hands, the treatment is successful. In delayed cases and in inexperienced hands, there may be permanent vision loss. The eye may even be lost.
